Unfortunately it seems if you want to earn this medal now you have to die in combat doing something extraordinary as opposed to just doing something extraordinary.

The award now is too tied up with politics compared to how it used to be.
Presidents are worried about MoH winners doing stupid shit or getting into trouble, so giving it to dead people is a safe bet sadly.
